Contenders for Purple cap. With the Indian Premier League 2021 set to begin from 9 April, we have made an early prediction on who may end up winning the Purple Cap this year. The award is given to the leading wicket taker of the IPL season. In case of a tie between two players, the Purple Cap is given to that bowler who has a better economy rate.
Sohail Tanvir of Pakistan was the first bowler to win the Purple Cap when he played for Rajasthan Royals and took 22 wickets in 11 matches. Dwayne Bravo has the record for taking most no. of wickets it a season. He took 32 wickets in the 2013 season playing for Chennai Super Kings. In the last season the Purple cap was won by Kagiso Rabada of Delhi Capitals taking 30 wickets from 17 matches.

Rashid Khan holds the top spot in the ICC T20 Rankings for bowlers. He is the one bowler that every captain wants in his team. He has been the most successful player from his country Afghanistan. 2. Trent Bolt – Contender for Purple cap
Boult joined the Mumbai Indians in last season during the trade window, where he performed amazingly with Jasprit Bumrah in the pace attack. He had an amazing season with the Mumbai Indians and won the trophy last year. He is also the best fast bowler of New Zealand right now. He has the ability to pick wickets in the opening overs. He finished third in the race of the Purple Cap last year.
3. Kagiso Rabada – Contender for Purple cap
Kagiso Rabada of Delhi Capitals won the Purple Cap in the last season. He took 30 wickets in 17 matches with an economy of 8.34. He also took 2 four-wicket hauls in that season. He has the ability to adapt to different conditions and make the best use of his variations. His prolific wicket-taking ability can help him to win the Purple cap consecutively.
4. Bhuvneshwar Kumar – Contender for Purple cap
Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Dwayne Bravo are the only bowlers who have won the purple cap twice in the IPL so far. Bhuvi won it consecutively in 2016 and 2017. He is one of the most economical bowlers in world cricket. He can easily clinch wickets in his death over bowling.
5. Jasprit Bumrah – Contender for Purple cap
Jasprit Bumrah is one of the best pacers for Indian and he is the best if the field when talking of death overs. He has the ability to bowl pinpoint yorkers. Bumrah narrowly missed out on the award last year. He took 27 wickets in 15 matches in the last season. Bumrah had his most successful IPL season in 2020. If he performs his best then no one can stop him from seizing his first Purple Cap.
6. Kyle Jamieson – Contender for Purple cap
The 6 feet 9 inch Kyle Jamieson has performed amazing for New Zealand in Test cricket. The tall right-arm quick had received the second-highest bid at last month’s IPL auction and was finally picked by RCB. Although he was proved too expensive in the series against Australia but he has the ability to perform better.
7. Pat Cummins – Contender for Purple cap
Pat Cummins became the most expensive foreign player to in the history of IPL when he was bought for 15.5 crores by KKR. Although his performance was not up to his price tag. He is considered as an all rounder but also bowls his four over spell. After seeing his value it can be said that he might have something to prove for his team.
8. Yuzvendra Chahal – Contender for Purple cap
In the previous 13 seasons, only one leg-spinner has won the IPL Purple Cap that is Imran Tahir and only one Indian spin bowler has taken the Purple Cap home that is Pragyan Ojha. If talking about current scenario then Chahal is the only Indian spinner who has the ability to claim Purple cap. Although he has not been in a good form for sometime but he definitely has the potential to clinch wickets.
9. Chris Morris – Contender for Purple cap
The most expensive overseas player in the IPL will have the burden of expectations to deliver. Morris has played a few match winning contributions in the past. Jofra Archer has been ruled out due to injury. This will give the responsibility of bowling attack Morris. He will be leading the bowling attack for Rajasthan Royals. Last year in few matches that he played for RCB he took fine no. wickets and he can repeat his performance this time also.
10. Mohammed Shami – Contender for Purple cap
Mohammed Shami will be leading the bowling attack for Punjab kings. He has missed out on quite a few matches in recent times due to injury. But he is expected to be back for the IPL 2021. The veteran bowler has been in his best form in the past of couple of years.
The list above is purely based on prediction after a detailed analysis. Some big names have missed out of the list because there are only ten spots. Jofra Archer would have been one of the top contender for Purple cap but he is going to miss the IPL or a major part of the tournament. That’s why he is not included in the above list. It is almost certain that the Purple cap winner of IPL 2021 will emerge from the above list.
