National teams will be allowed to take 26 players to Euro 2020 instead of the standard 23-man squads, UEFA have confirmed. The changes have arrived as UEFA hope to ease pressure on players and managers following a congested season due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Portugal Team Analysis for Euro 2020
Consisting of players from across Europe’s top clubs, the depth of Portugal’s squad is incredible. Manager Fernando Santos certainly has a tough job to select players for the final 26-man squad.
Portugal will be at Euro 2020 defending the title won in France in 2016. With Fernando Santos in charge, Portugal have achieved good results and won two trophies. Cristiano Ronaldo will again have a major role to play for Portugal. Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes will be taking on a more relevant role in the midfield. With players such as João Félix, Ruben Dias and Diego Jota, Portugal can dream big again.
Portugal ended their long wait for a major international title by beating hosts France 1-0 in the final five years ago. Portugal have always reached the quarter-finals since the tournament’s restructuring in 1996, as well as reaching three semi-finals and two finals in that time.

Portugal EURO 2020 Lineup (Probable)
Rui Patricio : Rui Patricio has added the UEFA Nations League to his medal collection while also winning a Taça da Liga with Sporting CP, before moving to the Premier League with Wolves. He has been ranked among the English top-flight’s top goalkeepers when it comes to saves and clean sheets, and he’ll be a formidable last line of defence for an already rock-solid backline. He has the ability to control his defence helped keep out the frustrated hosts.
Raphaël Guerreiro/Nuno Mendes : Portuguese have found a long-term replacement in Raphael Guerreiro for Fabio Coentrao on the left of their defence. The 18-year-old, Nuno Mendes made his senior debut for Lisbon last season and has since emerged as a key player for the Portuguese giants. He played a key role in their Primeira League win this season, their first in 19 years. He could be another option at left back. Mendes is one of the standout talents of his generation and is amongst the best young left-backs in European football.
Ruben Dias : Dias has been immense for Pep Guardiola’s side since his €68 million move from Benfica in last summer’s transfer window. Despite just being 23, Dias already believes he is the greatest Portuguese defender ever, putting himself above Ricardo Carvalho. He may become the greatest Portuguese defender of all time by the time he hangs up his boots.
Jose Fonte/Pepe : Fonte has been excellent for Lille this season but he can be overlooked for veteran Pepe in the group stage. Pepe was voted as UEFA’s man of the match in the final win over France. The centre-back was strong and dominant where he needed to be, and he seemed to set himself up as the rock upon which his side could build their success.
Nelson Semedo/Joao Cancelo : The Portuguese full-back, who cost an initial £30million from Barcelona, has received lots of criticism in his first season at Molineux. However, Nelson Semedo is very quietly improving on Wolves’ right side. But it’s important to remember just how quick Joao Cancelo is. The two youngster will play a vital role in Portugal squad for Euro 2020.
Bruno Fernandes : Bruno could be a real asset for Portugal ahead of the UEFA EURO 2020 after recording mind boggling numbers in the Premier League this season. The Manchester United skipper has been hailed as the United’s top performer this season. There is no need telling how essential he will be to Fernando Santos’ plans should he replicate the form in the upcoming tests. Bruno is the most important key player after Ronaldo in Portugal squad for Euro 2020.
Bernardo Silva : The Portuguese playmaker has been outstanding for Manchester City. The versatile playmaker played an instrumental role in the Blues’ outstanding campaign in which they won four domestic trophies. However, last season was underwhelming for Silva with his form and performances gradually deteriorating, and the Portugal man delivered multiple lacklustre displays as Liverpool brushed City aside to win the Premier League title. But his place in Portugal squad is almost confirmed.
William Carvalho : William Carvalho was excellent in the final victory over France. Yellow cards are an occupational hazard for a player whose reputation as a tough-tackling, hard-working defensive midfielder was enhanced over the tournament. He is just another veteran player who is selected in Portugal squad for Euro 2020.
Danilo Pereira : The 29-year-old Portuguese midfielder joined Paris Saint-Germain with option to buy until June 2021. Danilo scored 19 goals and made 8 assists in 202 appearances for the Portuguese club Porto. He also helped Portugal in winning the UEFA EURO 2016 title. He has been included in Portugal squad for Euro 2020.
Cristiano Ronaldo : The GOAT looks all set to lead the attacking line of Portugal for the Euro 2020. Even at 36 years old, Ronaldo is one of the most lethal forwards on the planet. He deserves this success as much as anyone, and how he loved it when it arrived. Ronaldo has formed an extremely close bond with his national team manager over the years. The images of him acting as a second manager from the dugout during the Euro 2016 final have become iconic. He is the most important player in Portugal squad for Euro 2020.
Joao Felix/Diogo Jota/Andre Silva : Diogo Jota will miss Premier League run-in as Liverpool chase Champions League qualification due to injury. But the 24-year-old will still hope to make Euro 2020 with Portugal. Between injuries and a lack of form, Joao Felix now been on the bench for six games in a row for Atletico Madrid and hasn’t lived up to expectation when he’s come on either. Silva is yet another source of encouragement for Fernando Santos as he looks to become the first coach to win more than one European Championship. Let’s see who gets to start in Portugal squad for Euro 2020.
We will provide UEFA EURO 2020 Team Analysis for all other teams participating in the tournament.
