Andre Russell joined Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014 and since then he has been one of the most explosive and influential players in the history of the Indian Premier League. During his long association with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Russell single handedly won a lot of matches for KKR. Since joining the team in 2014, he established himself as a match-winning all-rounder capable of changing the outcome of a game with both bat and ball. Even though he did not always bat in the top order, his explosive cameos in the final overs helped the team post or chase competitive totals. His aggressive batting style, ability to hit long sixes, and fast scoring rate made him one of the most feared finishers in the league. It is quite ungrateful for the fans as they will not be able to see Russell in IPL 2026. Let’s see the reason behind Andre Russell’s absence from IPL.

Why Andre Russell is not playing in IPL ?
Andre Russell will not play in the 2026 season of the Indian Premier League because he decided to step away from the tournament after the 2025 season. KKR released him before the 2026 auction, and instead of entering the auction, Russell chose to retire from IPL completely. After more than a decade in the league, the physical demands of playing as an all-rounder—where he had to bat aggressively, bowl fast overs, and field intensely throughout a long tournament—became increasingly challenging, especially as he moved into his late 30s. Due to this workload and the need to manage his fitness, he chose to retire from playing in the IPL rather than continue competing at the same level. However, Russell’s connection with Kolkata Knight Riders continues, as he has taken on a role around the team’s support staff to mentor and guide younger players with his experience.
Hanging up my IPL boots… but not the swagger 💜💛
What a ride it’s been in the IPL — 12 seasons of memories, and a whole lot of love from the @KKRiders family 🙏🏿
I’ll still be smashing sixes and taking wickets in every other league around the world 🌎🔥

Andre Russell’s career with Kolkata Knight Riders
The real peak of Russell’s career with KKR came between 2018 and 2022. During these seasons, he became the centerpiece of the team’s middle order and often turned losing situations into victories. In the 2019 IPL season, Russell delivered one of the most remarkable individual performances in league history. Batting mostly in the lower middle order, he scored over 500 runs with an extraordinary strike rate of around 200. His ability to clear boundaries consistently made him one of the most entertaining players in the tournament, and he was awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the season.
Apart from his destructive batting, Russell also contributed significantly as a fast bowler. He regularly bowled crucial overs in the middle and death phases of the innings and picked up important wickets. His strength as a genuine all-rounder allowed KKR to maintain balance in their playing XI, giving them flexibility in team combinations. Russell’s athletic fielding and energetic presence on the field further added value to the team.
Over the years, Russell built a reputation for delivering under pressure. Many of his innings came when KKR were struggling in difficult chases, where he would single-handedly revive the team’s chances with rapid scoring. His famous last-over sixes and dramatic finishes became a trademark of his career. Fans of Kolkata Knight Riders often considered him one of the most exciting players to ever wear the purple and gold jersey.
