Tite, the head coach of the Brazilian international team, announced the Brazilian squad for the upcoming Copa America. Brazil are among the favourites to win the continental tournament and have some exciting stars at their disposal. However, some big names are missing from the list.
Arsenal defender David Luiz was a regular starter in Brazil’s international team for past years. But the 34-year-old is not included in Brazil 24-man squad announced by Tite. In 2016 also, he was among the experienced players who were left out of the Brazil squad for the Copa America Centenario. But this time it was not a surprising decision as he was also injured. Luiz is yet to return and it is understandable that Tite doesn’t want to take a chance with a player who is well into his 30s and is recovering from an injury.
Luiz joined Arsenal from Chelsea for £8 million in the summer of 2018, and went on to establish himself as a key member of the Gunners squad. David Luiz has had a rather underwhelming final season with Arsenal. He found his playing time significantly reduced under Mikel Arteta last season, though, with the north London outfit ultimately deciding against extending his contract for another year. He only started 17 Premier League matches this term.
David Luiz was forced off with an injury during Arsenal’s 2-0 win against Newcastle at St James’ Park on Sunday. Luiz went down injured just after the 50th-minute mark and was replaced by Calum Chambers. The Brazilian appeared to go down with a hamstring injury after playing a long ball up field. He was checked by the physio but was clearly in pain. Manager Mikel Arteta decided to replace him with Chambers, who featured in the centre of defence for the first time this season.
