After witnessing a season to forget with La Liga giants Real Madrid, Brazilian star Marcelo has not been picked by coach Tite is Brazil’s 26-man squad for World Cup 2022. Marcelo was one of Brazil’s captains during the 2018 World Cup, therefore he is the headline name to miss out. The reason behind his exclusion is as follows:

The defender has had a difficult season with Real Madrid, falling out of favour under manager and failing to recapture his best form after Zinedine Zidane’s return to the club. Marcelo also went on to lose out his starting place for Real and was often benched and considered a second option to youngster Ferland Mendy. The Brazilian has grown increasingly frustrated with his manager after being relegated to a back-up role behind Ferland Mendy.

Brazil also have great options for left back position. Alex Sandro and Filipe Luis are also experienced players at this position. Coach Tite chosen to go with Alex Sandro and youngster Renan Lodi. Alex Sandro returned to the squad after missing out on the World Cup and, as it stands, could now be considered the long-term first-choice left-back as Brazil look to Qatar 2022. The Juventus man will then be 31-years-old, whereas Marcelo is aged 34.
