Copa America 2020 was postponed last year due to the outbreak of Coronavirus and it is scheduled to start from June 14, 2021. Copa America 2021 moved to Brazil on short notice when co-hosts Colombia and Argentina pulled out.
The Copa America’s upcoming edition would be the 47th edition of the prestigious Latin American international football tournament. The competition was postponed in 2020 due to the pandemic. It is all set to get underway from June 13 this year. The tournament was scheduled to be held in Argentina and Colombia.
After it has been clear that Colombia and Argentina will not be able to host Copa America 2021 due to civil unrest and Covid-19 concerns, CONMEBOL announced that Brazil has stepped in to stage elite continental competition.
Reason behind Philippe Coutinho’s absence from Brazil Copa America 2021 squad
Philippe Coutinho has not been included in the Brazil Squad for Copa America 2021 due to an injury. He will miss this year’s Copa America after undergoing another knee surgery, according to national team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar. Coutinho, 28, underwent surgery in early January to repair a torn meniscus and had another operation on the same left knee.
“I can say he won’t recover in time for Copa America,” Rasmer said.
The surgery was performed by Lasmar at his private clinic in the southeastern Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte. It was Coutinho’s third operation on the knee since January.
The Brazilian attacking midfielder has not played since suffering lateral meniscus damage in Barcelona’s 1-1 home draw with Eibar on December 29.
Coutinho returned to Barcelona at the start of the season following a year-long loan at Bayern Munich. He scored three goals in 14 games under Ronald Koeman before the injury.
Barcelona midfielder Philippe Coutinho was dropped from Brazil’s squad for a pair of World Cup qualifying matches in November because of injury.
