Why Sergio Ramos is not included in Spain Squad?

The new manager of Spain National Team informed Spain’s most capped player Sergio Ramos that the player is not part of his plans. After this Ramos announced his retirement from international football. Ramos was a crucial part of Spain’s World Cup and Euro winning teams. Ramos continues to play club football.

Many big names are missing from the upcoming UEFA Nations League tournament. The most shocking omission of them all comes in the form of Sergio Ramos. Spain Coach Luis Enrique did not pick Sergio Ramos for his Spain Nations League plans. The Real Madrid centre back won the last of his 180 caps in March this year.

Reason of Sergio Ramos absence from Spain Squad

The reason behind the omission of Ramos from Spain squad is his lack of playing time in this season. He endured an injury-plagued season that has limited him to just 15 Spanish league appearances and only five games in all competitions in 2021 – the last of which came in the club’s 2-0 Champions League semi-final second-leg defeat by Chelsea on May 5. A disappointing season with Real Madrid, which saw Ramos sidelined for much of the campaign with injury, is the reason for the defender’s exclusion from the Spain Euro 2020 squad. It is the first time that a Real Madrid player has not been included in a Spain squad for a major tournament.

The Real Madrid captain went through a successful knee operation in January, but still only started two games in 2021 – and was left on the bench for Madrid’s game against Villarreal on the final day of the season.

The 35-year-old was part of a Real Madrid side that finished second in La Liga and completed a trophyless campaign for the first time since 2009-10.

What does Luis Enrique said on exclusion of Sergio Ramos from Spain Squad ?

“I’ve not included Ramos because he’s not been able to play much this season, especially since January he’s not been fit enough, and at times not even training with the group at his club.”

“It wasn’t easy, but I called him last night and we had a difficult and tough conversation. I feel bad as he’s a player who has always been at the top level and has a future with the national team. It’s a decision that I’ve taken for the good of the national team and the group as a whole.” Enrique told a news conference.

What was the reaction of Sergio Ramos after not making it to Spain Euro 2020 Squad ?

“I’ve fought and worked with my body and soul to be 100 per-cent fit for Real Madrid and the national team but sometimes things don’t work out. It hurts me not to be able to help my teammates and not defend Spain.”

Sergio Ramos has been a veteran for the Spain national team, amassing 180 caps and winning a World Cup and two European Championships during his lengthy career.

Fans are very sad to know that Sergio Ramos has not been included in Spain Squad for Euro 2020. The decision from Luis Enrique is also a bit shocking because National teams are allowed to take 26 players instead of the standard 23-man squads. The changes have arrived as UEFA hope to ease pressure on players and managers following a congested season due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Even after this Luis Enrique selected just 24 players. Everyone was expecting that Ramos may get at least a spot in the squad if not a start in the playing XI.

Another confusing thing was that the coach picked Manchester City defender Eric Garcia in Spain Squad for Euro 2020. Enrique told that Ramos has not been picked due to his lack of playing time this season for Real Madrid. Garcia too has played very few matches of City after it was confirmed that he will join Barcelona at the end of the season. He hardly got to start matches for Manchester City.

Luis Enrique has also taken some bold decisions to include the likes of Eric Garcia over Nacho Fernandez with Adama Traore and Pablo Sarabia also getting the nod ahead of Iago Aspas. Manchester City’s Aymeric Laporte has also been included in the Spain squad Euro 2020 for the first time since he decided to switch nationalities and feature for Spain rather than France earlier last month.
